14 most beautiful outdoor pools of the world

outdoor pools

On my travels I have swum in so many beautiful waterholes and outdoor pools, unwinding, splashing in the water and enjoying the breathtaking nature around the pool. Most of the time, the pools or waterholes are in stunning locations, in the middle of mountains or right by the sea, sometimes they are easier and sometimes harder to find. Today I show you my experiences in the most beautiful outdoor pools of the world that I was allowed to experience.

Maraetotara Falls in New Zealand

Neuseeland Ostkap

A little insider tip at the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, about half an hour from Napier. Before you go swimming, make sure your car is locked and your valuables are safe. And it does take a bit of courage to swim in the waterhole, because the water is freezing cold!

Blue Lagoon in Iceland

blaue lagune island

The blue lagoon is probably one of the most famous outdoor pools in the world. Almost on every bucket list, however, a swim in the blue lagoon is also worthwhile. The water is pleasantly warm, the view of the surrounding nature is magnificent and the mud mask is also a new experience.

All to know for a road trip in Iceland:

Wyadup Rocks in Western Australia

Near Yullingup you will find the beautiful rock formations of Wyadup Rocks. Right by the roaring sea, with powerful waves and a beautiful view of the coast. Amidst the rocks you will also find waterholes where you can take a dip with a view of the sea – even small fish will keep you company.

Cenote Azul in Mexico

Cente Azul Mexiko

One of my favourite memories from when I travelled with my friends in Yucatan, on the east coast of Mexico: swimming in the Cenote Azul. Equipped with diving goggles, you can snorkel in peace, enjoy the beautiful water or jump off the small cliff into the clear water! It’s best to come in the late afternoon – that’s when it’s least busy. But be sure to apply mosquito spray!

Cairns lagoon in Australia

The lagoon directly by the sea in the middle of Cairns in the north of Australia’s east coast is definitely worth a visit. Here you can recover from your “travel stress” or the long journey and enjoy the view of the sea.

Seljavallalaug in Iceland

The small outdoor pool on the south-east coast of Iceland is unfortunately no longer an insider tip, but no less beautiful! From the car park, walk down into the valley for about 15 minutes to find Seljavallalaug around the last corner. Here you can swim a few laps and admire the majestic mountain slopes in the surroundings.

Polynesian Spa in New Zealand

One of the most beautiful outdoor spas, overlooking Lake Rotorua, used for bathing since the 18th century. The hot springs and various pools are naturally heated because the earth bubbles beneath the city of Rotorua. A bath in the geothermal baths is particularly beneficial for the skin due to the various minerals.

In the middle of Zurich in Switzerland, you can jump into the river water. For the very brave: a little above the river bath, you can jump into the water from the bridge and let yourself be carried by the current. What could be better than enjoying a little summer feeling in the middle of the city?

Hierve el Agua in Mexico

One of the most breathtaking views I have seen in my life: Herve el Agua, about 70 kilometres from Oaxaca. We did a small tour with our hostel and not only drove high up into the mountains, learned a lot about the petrified waterfall, tested the mineral-rich pools, enjoyed the panorama and on the way back tasted the typical local mezcal.

McLaren Falls in New Zealand

The first time we hiked to the wrong waterfall, so we didn’t have time to jump into the water of the beautiful McLaren Falls on the way back. Thousands of small waterfalls gush out of the rock formations, you can jump into the water or make yourself comfortable with a towel above the river.

Bondi Beach in Australia

Probably the most photographed outdoor pool in the world: Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. And don’t blame him, the sea view is beautiful and you can enjoy a dip in the pool after walking the Coogee Walk along the coast.

Angel’s Billabong in Indonesia

One of the most beautiful outdoor pools, of course: with a view of the ocean! Angel’s Billabong is on the island of Nusa Penida, about 40 minutes from Bali. Once on the island, just hire a scooter and drive to the marked spot – it will be worth it!
